Introduction : Jonai, the Head Quarter of the Jonai civil subdivision, is the easternmost sub-Division of Dhemaji District of Assam and is about 554 kilometer away from the state capital Dispur (Guwahati) and 100 kilometer away from the district head quarter Dhemaji. Covering a total geographical area of 1111.81 square kilometer and its population is 1, 43,199. It is bounded by part of Arunachal Pradesh called Ruksin sub-division of East Siang district in the North, Lally (known as Brahmaputra) River in South, Sipiya River and Sadiya Subdivision of Tinisukia district in the East and Simen River in the West. The college is located in the hearth of the town at Udoipur at 95.1600E longitude and 27.7700N latitude. Jonai is linked by the National High way-52. Bus service from state capital Dispur , Ferry and transport services are available from Dibrugarh via Tinimile Ghat in Poba Reserve Forest known as Rain forest about 6 kilometer away from main Jonai Bazer and Bogibil Ghat about 75 kilometers Via Kulajan and Akajan to Jonai. Earlier Meter Gauge Railway was from Rongia to Murkongselek railway station which is the last station of NEF railway. Now is under Broad Guage conversion.
Jonai is dominated by tribal community mainly Mising community and it is newly urbanized town. After the independence of 54 years Jonai was backward in every side viz-politically, economically,educationally. There is no drastic change of this area due to lack of proper education. But the growing numbers of children are increasing day by day without having any right education in science. As a result of, the people of Jonai have established its science college called “JONAI SCIENCE COLLEGE” in 2001 to arrange and caters well facilities and to promote the poor students’ who could not afford to go outside for further higher studies. It is the only college of this area having both Science and Arts’ streams.
